Tours

This year’s annual meeting features three historically important and entertaining tours: one to Cd. Juárez prior to the opening reception; one to the Mission Trail of El Paso’s Lower Valley; and the other to the Mesilla Valley south of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Tour of Archives in
Cd. Juárez

Thursday, May 25
1:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.

$25 (limited space available)

Led by archaeologist R.B. Brown, this tour will include the three principal archives in Ciudad Juárez: Special Collections at the University of Ciudad Juárez, the Archivo Mu-nicipal in the Biblioteca Tolentino and the Archives at the Catedral. There will be a limited amount of walking so good shoes and a hat are suggested.  At the end of the tour,

participants will have the opportunity to shop around the Catedral and will join the reception at the Museo Histórico

de Cd. Juárez de la Ex-Aduana at 6:00 p.m.

Mission Trail

Saturday, May 27
2:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.

$30 (space limited to 25 persons)

El Paso abounds in history and you will see some of the places here where history was made!  The tour will depart at 2:00 p.m. for our Mission Valley.  Some of the places we will visit are: Ysleta Mission, one of the oldest buildings in Texas; Socorro Mission, the oldest continuously active parish in the United States; and San Elizario Presidio, originally established as a fort by the Spanish government in the 1780s on the Camino Real.  We’ll also see the San Eli jail – the only jail Billy the Kid broke into!  We’ll make a short stop at the Tigua Indian Cultural Center for an opportunity to buy Tigua arts and crafts.

A Jaunt into Old New Mexico

Saturday, May 27
2:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.

$45 (space limited to 25 persons)

Visit the historic village of Mesilla, New Mexico which was once the capital of the Arizona and New Mexico Territories, and was host to the Conquistadors, Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, Kit Carson and Pancho Villa. The tour will leave at 2:00 p.m. for Mesilla. We’ll drive through the lush Upper Valley region into New Mexico, passing fields irrigated by the Rio Grande and driving through Stahmann Pecan Farms, one of the largest pecan groves in the world.  We’ll tour Mesilla, seeing the Plaza and San Albino Church built in 1850, making it one of the oldest churches in the Valley.  We’ll have a little time for shopping – there  are excellent galleries, a fascinating book store, fine jewelry shops, unusual clothing boutiques, the Stahmann Pecan Farms store and souvenir shops –  one was once a jail in which Bill the Kid was incarcerated for the murder of Sheriff Brady in 1881.  Before we head back to El Paso, we’ll stop at the Blue Teal Vineyards for a private wine tasting.
